Year's End...

Hello!

After reading many of your blogs on the projects you have completed this year, I got to thinking about the projects I've done this year and was surprised of what I have actually finished.  My hubby and kids always tell me I'm constantly working on something, but I guess I didn't realize it until today.

Here's how it turned out...
16 quilted projects
8 sewn projects
17 crocheted projects
1 painted project
1 no sew/stitched project

43 projects completed in the year.  That's an average of about 3 1/2 projects a month.  Guess I was busier than I thought.

I was surprised that the crochet and quilted were close in number.  I figured I would favor one, a lot more than the other, but it seems that is where my stitch is.

Putting Away the Old Year, Getting Ready for the New

Hello!

Well, today was the day I took my Christmas decorations down.  Honestly, my living area looks bare now, after having decorations up for the past two months ~ first Thanksgiving and then Christmas.  I always have that feeling of  "something is missing", for the first day or two, after taking down the decorations.  I usually use the time to change up the daily decor, instead of putting it all back the way it was before the holidays.

I'm still working on the small afghan and am close to having it finished.

I also started a new project today.

This will be another wall hanging for my cubicle at work ~ to get me through January.

The flowers are from a Christmas bouquet, I decided had lived out its life.  I took the best looking flowers and leaves off the stems and separated them.  I placed them, then pinned them down onto the background fabric.

I am using a blanket stitch in contrasting embroidery threads, to applique them in place.   I'm using black for the burgundy flowers, a dark red for the white flowers, and I plan to use a dark green for the leaves.   I will either use french knots or seed beads for the center of the flowers.

TRADITIONS FOR NEW YEAR

In my family, blacked eye peas and ham hocks (Hoppin' John) are present in a meal on the first day of the year.  This is a southern tradition, here in the States.  Eating black eyed peas to have plenty of everything in the new year.

Another tradition, for me is watching (on the TV) the dropping of the New Year ball at 11:59 PM, each New Year's eve, in Times Square, New York City.  It takes one minute to descend, landing at 12:00 AM in the new year.

And you've heard of the Rose Bowl and the Tournament of Roses parade that precedes the game.  My niece Chloe will be in the parade this year, with the All Lubbock Marching Band.  She will be twirling a flag.  I will miss seeing her.  I usually watch the Rose parade, but this year I'll be working that day.

What traditions do you have?

You Just Never Know...

Hi!

Today, my daughter and I took a short road trip.  We went to a couple of flea markets.

A few blogs back, I had mentioned I have some vintage santa candles but no candlesticks to put them in.    I found a pair today.  They are a simple glass design and will work well with other candles in my decor.

I also found a pretty plaque with a rose carved into it.  I tried but couldn't get a good picture of it.  The stone it's made out of, kept glaring or I just couldn't get the camera to focus right.

Audre found an old child's tractor and I took this picture of her on it.  :)

As we continued on... I found this...  The tag on it read "1902 Rat Scrubber"... did I read that right?... Surely not...   I checked it again and sure enough that's what the writing on the tag looked like. "1902 Rat Scrubber".   I thought, No... surely not, surely it's not a scrubber for those furry little rodents.

Anyway, it was a cool find.  I left it where I found it but my curiosity got the best of me and when I got home I did some research.

As you can imagine, I found nothing about antique rat scrubbers.   So... I looked through the suggestions, selected some images and found one that looked just like the one I saw at the flea market today.   I'm glad to say I now know the true name for this cool tool.  It is a antique Pot Scrubber, not rat scrubber.   I kind of wish I had went ahead bought it.  It would look cool hanging in the kitchen.  Oh well, maybe it will be there the next time I go and have a little extra cash.

On the way home, a couple of men were on the highway, stopping traffic.   I was the car in front of the line building up behind me.  They were trying to get a semi with a trailer backed into a small business yard.  The big truck was all the way across the road, back and forth, trying to maneuver it in to the small driveway.  A red minivan was behind me.    I sat there patiently waiting, then....

HONK... HONK HONK HONK....HONK!!! The lady in the red mini van behind me was not honking in kindness.  The next thing I know, she pulls out around me and speeds by, toward the truck and man standing between us and the truck.  He tried to get out of the way, but it seemed any way he moved, she moved.  I thought she was going to hit him.   There was nowhere for her to go, except through the man and the truck.   I don't know if she just lost her cool or had an emergency come up, all of a sudden, but she almost caused an emergency when she reacted the way she did.

I had my camera with me, but I was too stunned to take a picture.  I just sat there shaking my head and I wasn't alone.  I looked in my rear view mirror and the man in the truck behind me was shaking his head too.

You just never know...

What ever the case, I hope she made it to her destination safely without causing injury to anyone else.

What a pleasant way to end the year...

Hello!

This morning, a beautiful amaryllis bloom welcomed me as I walked into the kitchen.   I received it about 2 weeks ago from a friend.

In the past three days, I have watched it go from one bud, to three, then having one open over night, with another beginning to open today.  I think it will be fully open in the morning.  The third bloom will probably be open by the end of the week.

This is a view of it with the sun shining on it, and the background in shadow.

What a pleasant way to end the year, with pretty new blooms.

On the way home this evening, I took this picture.  There is only one jet in this picture, but at the time I was taking it, there were eight jets in the air.

The God on the Mountain...

Hello!

I trust you had a pleasant and blessed Christmas holiday, filled with laughter and love.

As this week winds down and the year ends,  I look back, over my shoulder, at 2011.  There were many times "down in the valley" and a few times on "top of the mountain".

However, no matter what, I knew, I was not alone.   The God on the mountain is the same God that's in the valley ~ my Strength and my Comforter.

Things I have learned in the past year...

  1. I learned during a time of working with a tyrant that, by the grace of God,  I can hold my tongue.
  2. I learned to not sweat the small stuff, usually it doesn't matter to me within the next hour anyway.
  3. I've learned that I can't always control or change a situation.  Thereby, teaching me to hand it all over to God.
  4. I learned that I'm still a kid at heart, though my hair has gained a lot of gray this year.
  5. I learned that I tend to over schedule myself, causing myself stress. (this is something I hope to remedy in 2012)
  6. I've learned to be ready for change, as change has been the main theme in the past nine months.
I look toward 2012 with a little uncertainty.  I will return to work with my weekly hours cut back, another change.  Questions like "what's going to happen next?" run through my mind, but I know my Strength and my Comforter will be with me.

Some goals I have set for myself in 2012...
  1. To get my "block of the month" done on time, each month.
  2. To make a point to not over schedule myself ~ learn to say "no thank you".
  3. To do better with sending out cards for special occasions, like b-days, anniversary, get well, etc.
  4. To do better with making sure I get my quiet time for prayer and Bible study.
I hope I haven't given myself too many goals for the new year.   I will do my best.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

2012... looking forward, what goals have you set?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I worked on my small afghan today and hope to get it finished this week.  I also started to crochet a pot holder today.  This will be my first pot holder to make.  I will post a pic of both items when I get them done this week.

My son, Josh, painted a picture this week.   I thought he did a good job.  Check it out.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well, that's all I have for this evening.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

God bless and keep you,

Pretty Lights and Tasty Recipe

Hello,

I found out today, that I will be starting 2012 out with cut hours at work.  I'm going from 40 to 36 hours.  This will give me more time on the weekends to work on my quilting, etc.   Though it will cut my paycheck, I'm trying to look at it in a positive way.   I can't change the situation, so I'm trusting God, that everything will work out.

My family and I took my dad-n-law, Dennis, his Christmas gift today and had a good visit with him. :)

This evening David and Audre went to the town square and took some good pictures of it lit up for Christmas.  Aren't they pretty?

WEEKLY RECIPE

Chicken Stew
1 whole chicken, cut up
1 can chicken broth
10 cups of water
1/2 onion, cut in large chunks
1 large clove of garlic, quartered
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tbsp. Cavendar's Greek seasoning (or seasoning of your choice)

1 can cream of chicken soup
3 medium potatoes, peeled and cut in chunks
2-3 carrots, scrapped and cut in chunks
8 oz. frozen whole kernel corn, can use canned, but drain off liquid
2 tbsp. butter, melted
1/2 cup milk
1 cup shredded melting cheese

Place first eight ingredients in a large pot and cook until chicken is cooked all the way through.  Remove chicken from pot onto a platter to cool, enough to pull off the bone. Strain the broth and return to pot.  While chicken is cooling, peel and chunk potatoes and carrots and add to broth.  Pull chicken off the bone and add to broth.  Add cream of chicken and corn.  Bring, back to a boil and cook for 20 minutes or until carrots and potatoes are done.  Add butter, milk and cheese, stirring until the cheese is melted.  Serve with biscuits or crackers.

Good Company, Good Food

What a busy day!

I woke up late.  It's my first day off, what else did you expect?  ha ha ha

I got started on a delicious chicken stew.   I will post it later this week for my weekly recipe.  Anyway, I was cooking my stew, getting ready to add the last few ingredients, at the end of the cooking process and my phone rings.

It's my friend Charlotte, asking me if I was going to help decorate the OEM building for our quilt guild's Christmas party today.

I totally forgot, I was suppose to meet her at 2:00 this afternoon.  As a matter of fact, I didn't even think about what day it was, this morning.  So I finished up my stew and headed over to the OEM building.

This evening we had our Christmas party.

Good company...

Here are the first of the members to arrive.  :)

Good food....

A  local  restaurant, The Grape Vine, catered our  meal.

The table settings...

These are the napkins, folded up like little Christmas trees.  They were paired with an embroidered pin/ornament.  We also placed a fabric bundle to go with each one.

We played "dirty santa" with fat quarters.  The challenge is to create something with the fat quarter you wind up with, and bring it to the next Christmas party, to show off.

The fat quarter I ended up with, is a cute snowman print.

TODAY'S QUESTION

In regard to ornaments, handcrafted or commercial?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well I guess that's if for this evening.

Pretty Ornaments

Hello All!!

As of 4:30 this afternoon, I am on holiday from work until 1/2/12.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

PRETTY ORNAMENTS

I have been blessed with some pretty ornaments in the past two days.

This one is from my friend Gloria. She is my Sunday School Teacher.

These are from my friend Debbie.  She made these ornaments on her embroidery machine.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

Christmas tree theme?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well Y'all... I'm signing off... mentally tired.  I hope these next two weeks will be a time of rejuvenation for my brain.  I have so much stuff from work and stress, clamoring to get to the front of my brain and some of the stuff is getting trampled on and not making it.

Good night and sweet dreams!

Have a great Tuesday.  :)

God bless and keep you,
Sonia

Many years ago...

Well, I finished the cross stitched ornament today.

Now, I think I can cross stitch something bigger in the future.

Today was another day of relaxation.  I'm just trying to catch up, I guess.  :)

I was going to make molasses cookies today, but when I went shopping this evening, I couldn't find any molasses.   I will try to find it at the grocery store here in town, tomorrow.  If I can't find it, I will make something else for my Recipe of the Week.

Well, just two more work days and then I'm off work until after New Year's Day.   YEA!!

This week, at work we are having a Tea Cup Auction.  The  proceeds go toward helping families in need, in our community.  We will have the drawing tomorrow and give everything away.   We received a lot of items this year.  A friend and I paired everything up, with one or more things, into bundles and we wound up with over 50 bundles.   Isn't that amazing!!   I hope we raise a lot of money to help those in need.

This has been a busy week trying to get everything, I can, done before I leave for vacation.   I want to start the new year out, without being behind.

Not much to share this evening.  Was going to make some Christmas curtains this evening, but changed my mind.  I will make curtains that I can use year around.  I plan on doing so during my time off at Christmas.

So I just used tonight to take it easy, relax and watch a little of TV with my hubby and kids.

Hope your day was good.

That's My Girl! :)

Hello,

As promised I am posting the block of the month tonight.  I admit though, I ran out of time today, with church and a Christmas music program my daughter was in this afternoon. So, I'm using the santa hat birdhouse, I did a few weeks ago, for another project.   You can find it on the AQST Block of the Month tab, if you don't get it today.

I have to brag on my daughter, a little bit.  She did such an awesome job today in the program.  She played the drums.  I was screaming on the inside "That's my girl!!".  :)  I chose to keep it in, so that I wouldn't embarrass her.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

BLOCK OF THE MONTH

BLOCK #3

1 - 11" square of your background color
1 fat quarter of red fabric
1 fat quarter of white fabric
scrap pieces of black fabric and gray fabric (big enough for hole)
1 bead or scrap fabric for perch
embellishments

  • Of the red fabric cut out two triangles 8" high, with a 5" base..  Place them right sides together and sew them together, leaving the base of the triangle open, so that you can turn the triangle right sides out.
  • Of the white fabric, cut a rectangle 5" x 1.5".  This will be the band for the santa hat.   Cut a 1.5" circle for the white ball at the tip of the hat.
  • Of the black fabric, cut a 1.5" circle for the door of the santa hat birdhouse.
  • Of the gray fabric, cut a crescent shape to applique on the black circle, previously cut.  This will give dimension to the opening, when the pieces are put together.

Lay the red triangle on the background fabric.  Fold the tip of the triangle over, as shown in the picture.  Pin the red fabric down and applique in place.   Now position the white rectangle at the base of the triangle and pin in place and applique.   Take the white circle and pin and applique it in place at the tip of the triangle.  You should have something that looks like a santa hat.

Now take the black circle and pin and applique it in place above the white band and in the center of the red fabric.  Take the gray crescent shape and applique it on the black circle, as shown in the picture.

Add the bead or a small circle for the perch.    Embellish the santa hat birdhouse as you like.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

For Christmas dinner, turkey or ham?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is my latest addition to my Christmas decorations.  I think I'm finally done.

This is on my dining table.  The tree is made from a catalog, I folded up then painted and glittered.  I added the bow and ribbon and presents to embellish it.

My table is small, so I need something that didn't take up too much space.  I think this worked out pretty good.  :)

Here's wishing you a wonderful week ahead!!

Bag It or Not

Hello all!

I trust you've had a good day.   It was down right chilly today, I think the high was in the forties.  I didn't venture out, so I'm not sure.  I stayed in and stayed nice and warm.

Today was a day of relaxing.   I think it was the first day I have truly relaxed in a couple of weeks.

I prepared some fat quarter packs, a small 5" charm pack, and a few packs of usable scrap fabrics.

These packs will be used as door prizes for the Christmas party, that the quilt guild I attend, has every year.

After I finished with the fabric packs, I wrapped presents and put them under the tree.   This year is the first year I put everything in gift bags.  My husband and kids usually wrap the packages they have, so there are some packages under that tree that aren't in bags.  :0)
Microsoft clip art

Let me tell you, in my mind bags are the way to go.  I had everything packaged and under the tree in record time and they look nice to boot.   I started using bags several years ago, because my wrapping is atrocious, but this is the first year that I have put everything in bags.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

Christmas bags or Christmas wrapping?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WEEKLY RECIPE

Today, I tried Bread Pudding.  I've never had bread pudding and was pleasantly surprised.  The recipe I used is from a cookbook I bought several years ago, and from friend. :)

Bread Pudding
by Helen Gilbreath

5 or 6 slices of bread
2 cups of milk
1 cup of sugar
2 eggs
1/3 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 teaspoon baking powder

Break bread into pieces.  Soak in milk at least 15 minutes.  Add remaining ingredients and beat on low until well blended.  Bake in buttered baking dish at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes.  Sprinkle top with nutmeg.

I didn't have nutmeg, so I sprinkle the top with cinnamon and it worked well.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That's it for now.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!

God bless and keep you,
Sonia

A Picture and an Ornament

Today is my dad's birthday, he's 68 and my parents 45th wedding anniversary.

We had an enjoyable visit this evening.  They are home.

Dad drew me a picture.

I found out a little more detail today.  Though my dad was release and sent home, he will be seeing a doctor every two weeks for the next six weeks.  They will be monitoring him as they ween him off the blood thinners.  The surgery he will be having will be for one bypass, but they aren't sure how well that will work or if they can get to it, as the bypass needed is on the back side of his heart.  They are also going to use a laser and cut holes in his heart (thus taking him off the blood thinners).  When, I asked what the purpose of the holes was, I learned that when holes are cut into the heart, they close up and scar over, creating new blood vessels that will feed the heart.

So it is day by day, and hopefully all will go well.

I want to thank you all for your continued prayers.   I value your prayers more than you can possibly know.  I believe in the power of prayer, in the support of prayer and in the comfort of prayer.

So again, Thank You!  :)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

Peanut butter and what?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After getting home this evening, my daughter showed me an ornament she made.  She likes to take old watches, keys, gears and such and make jewelry out of them.  She decided to make an ornament this time.  I think it looks pretty cool.

It is proudly hanging on the big tree.  After Christmas, Audre will take it back for safe keeping.

I guess that's it for now.  I hope to have a recipe for you tomorrow and the monthly block by the end of the weekend.

Here's wishing you a wonderful Saturday, full of laughter and blessings.

God bless and keep you,
Sonia
