Eufaula Quilt Show

5/27/15

This baby quilt measures 31" square.  The pattern for the five pieced blocks is called "Shoefly".  The flowers are hand pieced.  I worked on them during my lunch breaks at work.  I quilted it on my small home sewing machine.  The quilting outlines the flowers and the "shoeflies".  The backing is a coordinating chevron pattern fabric.

Echos of Friendship
I thought I'd share with you how I made the  Echos of Friendship wall hanging.

It all started with an inspirational card from a friend.  So I picked out fabrics.

Then I cut out the shapes for the plant, and I had to piece together the wings of the butterfly as the wings I had were not right for the monarch butterfly.  Then I chose the threads I would use for detail work.

I appliqued the pieces down then use the different colored threads to embellish them.

Then I had to figure out how to quilt it and decided on echo quilting it.  When it was finished it had the look of wind current to me and I thought it needed something more so the dragonflies were added.

Today, I took the "bull by the horns" so to speak and tried out the darning/free motion foot on my sewing machine.

I used this wall hanging as my first learning stitches. In each block I tried different stitches.

In the top block, I tried stippling but found that my movement of the fabric wasn't even and steady.  This caused an "eyelash" effect in the thread on the back of the piece.

In the middle block, I made a conscious effort to keep my movement of the fabric even and steady.  This worked out much better on the back.  My attempt at heart shapes still leaves something to be desired though. :)

In the bottom block, I tried loops... didn't do as well as the second block but not as bad as the first block either.

Lesson Learned: a steady and even pace is the key.

The blocks in this small quilt were rescued from a local flea market.  There they were pinned together on a shelf, collecting dust with a $5 price tag.  So, I picked them up and brought them home.  They will no longer be alone, as this quilt is going to the local Community Outreach Service.

The Logan County PieceMakers quilt guild had their annual quilt show this weekend.  We had a pretty good crowd.  Here are the quilts that were shown and the People Choice winners.
