Whimsical Christmas tree

Hello!   Hope this finds your week going well thus far.

I talked to my mom, after I got off work today. She told me, they were going to get to go home this evening, and they were waiting on the paperwork.  The doctors found a vein they can use for surgery, but are going to treat my dad with medications for two weeks.  He was put on bed rest in the hospital, in the last day or two, because he could have a heart attack at any time, so he is also limited at home as well.   He goes back to see the doctor in two weeks and then, I guess, they will go from there.  I'm glad my parents can go home, as it will be more comfortable for them.

Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts and they mean a lot.  Please continue to pray for my parents as they continue on through the steps the doctors have given them.

Here's what I've been working on over the weekend.   I will hang this whimsical Christmas tree in my cubicle at work.

TODAY'S QUESTION

What are three feelings you've had today?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well, not much else to share tonight.

Here's wishing you a terrific Tuesday!!

God bless and keep you,

My answer to the last question:  No, this chick was not created for Black Friday chaos.  :)

Weekly Recipe and then some...

Hello All!

My dad is still in the hospital.   He is doing okay, so far.  They did tests yesterday to see if he has enough veins left, to do another bypass surgery.   However, the doctors will not confer with one another until Monday, so... he is there over the weekend.  My mom is holding up okay.   It's just hard to wait.   You know?    I will keep you posted, the more I learn on his status.

My daughter and I went flea marketing today.   She found two movies and a book.   I found two books, two book marks, to match, and a pretty Christmas cloth to place on my piano or my cedar chest.   I got it for 50 cents, believe it or not.  My total flea market purchase today was $6.  I thought that was pretty good.  :)

Today was the day Autumn moved in, I think.   It rained all day and when it stopped, a cold front moved in.   I felt it when I stood outside, at the town square with my husband, waiting on the parade and the lighting of the Christmas lights this evening.

My daughter was in the parade... here she is, playing the snare drum.

I also tried to get a pic of the courthouse, all lit up.  This picture doesn't do it justice though.

WEEKLY RECIPE

This week, I'm giving you two recipes.

The first recipe is one I made for Thanksgiving.

Orange-Peach Fluff
2 packages of orange jello
1 tub of cool whip
1 can of peach chunks. drained
1 small bag of mini marshmallows

Make up the jello per instruction on box and let set.   Once the jello is set, mix in cool whip, half of the bag of marshmallows and the peaches.  Make sure the peaches are drained well.... You can adjust the amount of cool whip and marshmallows to your preference.   This is a yummy dessert.

Hot Cocoa Mix in a Jar
6 1/2 cups powdered milk
1 (5 ounce) package non-instant chocolate pudding mix
1 cup powdered chocolate drink mix
1/2 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
In a large bowl, combine powdered milk, chocolate pudding mix, chocolate drink mix powder, creamer, confectioners' sugar, and cocoa. Divide the mixture between two 1 quart jars. Seal, and decorate as desired. These can be stored in a dry area for up to 3 months.

Attach a tag with the following instructions: Hot Cocoa: Dissolve 1/3 cup cocoa mix in 1 cup boiling water.

TODAY'S QUESTION

Did you brave the mobs of Black Friday?  If so, was it worth it?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I started a Christmas wall hanging for my cubicle this weekend.  Actually, it is a two-fold project.  On one hand it is for my cubicle, on the other hand, it is a project I have to show at this years quilt guild Christmas party, because some of the fabric (a fat quarter) that's in it is what I got at last year's party.   I hope to finish it tomorrow.

I will let you go for now... have a wonderful Sunday!

Thank you all for your friendship!   Hugs!

God bless and keep you,
Sonia

My answer to the last question:  an opal.  I got it for $1, and its comparative list price is $273.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Hello!   Hope this finds everything going well for you and yours.  :)

Today, was a day of mixed feelings.   On one hand I was very happy at the next four days being off from work and planning to get some project done and planning the meal for tomorrow.

This afternoon, I received news that dampened my spirits.   I found out my dad had a spell last night, where he felt someone was setting on his chest.    My mom called the doctor, who decided to admit to the hospital for monitoring and to set up surgery.   A week or two ago, my dad was told that three of his bypasses were 100% blocked and the other two he has were blocked as well.   He had bypass surgery 12 years ago.

Today dad is doing fine, the tests they ran on him at the hospital this afternoon, all came back good, but they decided to go ahead an monitor him overnight and my mom and dad are waiting to talk to the doctor/surgeon.

So, I'm waiting to see what happens next.

I have full confidence everything is going to work out fine.    I'm a little worried about my mom.  I know she is stressed to max, which is very understandable.

Please remember my dad and mom in your prayers.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING AGAIN!!

It seems I can't say it enough.   Thanksgiving is just a great holiday.  It makes you slow down and think of all the things you are blessed with.

Some things I'm thankful for...

First and foremost:  The freedom I have in the Lord.  Without Him, I am nothing.
  • My family -all of my family, full of love and inspiration
  • My friends, those I see every day and those I have here.  I'm thankful for your support and encouragement, every day.
  • the beauty God created for us in nature.
  • My home, vehicle, clothing and food.
  • My job, though it gets stressful at times.
  • My joy of quilting and creating with my hands.
  • Music... I can't imagine not having music.
I could go on, as I'm sure each one of you could create a list a mile long.   I think it is important to be mindful of our blessing every day.   It helps to deal with trial and tribulations we face, when we remember that we have a lot to be thankful for.

TODAY'S QUESTION

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving my dear friends!!

My answer to yesterday's question:  When my husband was very down, medically, to the point I was afraid I was losing, I learned to take one day at a time and to trust in God to take care of things.

Surprise!

I came home for lunch today and saw a pleasant surprise.

In my driveway stood two friends, talking to my husband.  I haven't seen them since Easter.  Keith and Sherri moved out of state, shortly after Easter.

Today, they were on their way to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with their kids in Oklahoma, and were kind enough to stop by for a few minutes.

Talk about a hi-lite of my week!   Though I didn't get to visit with them long, it brought joy to my heart to see them again.

Just wish I had my camera ready and with me at the time.. but I didn't have my camera and the battery needed to be charged, to boot.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

Have you had an experience that has changed your outlook on life?  If so, how?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Today, I delivered the quilt I've been working on to the friend I made it for.   I always get a little nervous when I present a quilt, in fear it will not be good enough, but most of the time my fears are for naught.   Today, my friend was very pleased with the way the quilt turned out.  That made me happy.

Today, has just been a good day full of surprise, blessings and laughter.

Thank you Lord!!

Well this is a short week for me at work. I have workied my normal hours today and yesterday (8-5), but tomorrow I go in at 730 and leave at 230. I'm getting out early. EARLY!!! :) Then I'm off for the rest of the week.

I'll be taking down my fall decorations in my cubicle tomorrow and will most likely take my Christmas decorations in next week.

My hubby, kids and I are thinking of forgoing the turkey, dressing and pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving day, as we have celebrated twice, as a family, and I have three times, in the past week. I think we are going to go with mexican dishes. I hope to try some new recipes and will share the best one, for my weekly recipe this week.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'll let you go for now...

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

God bless and keep you,
Sonia

My Thanksgiving

Today, my day was slept away, by being on sinus pills.  I was awake for about four hours and in that time I was able to visit with family and enjoy another Thanksgiving meal, though I didn't eat much.
Microsoft clipart
I woke up about an hour ago... Hungry!  :)

So I fried up a little ham, scrambled an egg and placed them between two slices of David's homemade bread with a piece of cheese.  Then nuked it for few seconds to melt the cheese.  Very tasty.

A little something I wrote this evening....

There's a special feeling in the air,
Happy memories and new ones to share,
Around the tables, voices chatter,
New stories and old are replayed.
Knowing this chance of storytelling is rare.
Savory dishes are displayed.
Intimate the gathering, full of love and friendship.
Nothing is more precious than this.
Grateful, am I, to have experienced it.

I'll be signing off now.   Have a wonderful week!!

God bless and keep you,
Sonia

My answer to the last question: buying my hybrid civic.

Saturday, November 19, 2011

Hello all!

Today I'm high-lighting my husbands cooking skills.   He makes very good bread.  So my weekly recipe will be the bread recipe he used today for our family gathering.

It was a day of music, singing and fellowship as we enjoyed our Thanksgiving meal.   My second one thus far... have two more to go...

I worked on a lap quilt earlier today and was to the point of binding it, and wouldn't you know... the needle broke.   That was the fourth needle I have broken this week.  I can't figure out whats wrong with my machine.  I've tried everything I can think of, but it is still breaking needles.  I will have to work on my machine next week on one of the days I'm off.    If you have any suggestions, please share them with me.

I plan to bind the lap quilt by hand.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WEEKLY RECIPE

Country Crust Bread
2 pkgs. yeast
2 c. lukewarm water
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1/4 c. oil
6 c. all-purpose flour

Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water.  Stir in sugar, salt, eggs, oil and 3 cups flour, beat until smooth.  Mix in enough of the remaining flour to make a dough easy to handle.  Turn dough onto lightly floured board.  Knead until smooth and elastic, 8 to 10 minutes.  Place in a greased bowl; turn greased side up.  It can be refrigerated at this point 3 to 4 days.  Cover and let rise in warm place until double in size, 1 hour or more.   Punch down dough.  Divide in half.  Put in loaf pans or make rolls; brush with oil.  Let rise until double in size.  Place on lower rack in over so tops of pans are in center of oven.  Bake in preheated 350° oven for 30 to 35 minute or until golden brown.

Block #2

Thank goodness it's Friday!!

This has been one crazy week.   I taught hazardous communications all week long, while getting ready for environmental certification and fighting a head cold.   There was one point, I didn't think I was going to be able to teach the class, because my voice was going out, but I made it through.

I'm doing much better this evening, sitting here sipping a tall mug of hot chocolate and eating a biscuit.

Tonight I'm posting the 2nd block of the month, in my 12 month challenge.   I say challenge, because this is the first time I have done a block of the month and have to be committed.    I will post a recipe tomorrow.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

BLOCK OF THE MONTH #2

This month's block is appliqued.

Here's what you need....

1 -  11" square, your choice of background color
3 - Holly leaves
3 - Berries

You can cut the holly leaves and berries out free hand or use a template.   Here is a template I drew out for my block.   If you do raw edge applique cut out on the line.  If you do turn under applique, but 1/4" outside the line.

Lay the holly leaves down on the 11" square and applique in place.

I did raw edge applique with my sewing machine and used a contrasting colored thread in my bobbin.

Next lay your berries in place and applique them down.   Now you can embellish with ribbon or embroidery.   I used my sewing machine and stitched a ribbon design on the background.

Have fun with this block, put your own little twist on it and remember to share your block too.  :)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

Have you ever won a prize or a contest?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Don't forget to check the giveaways I posted in the previous post.  There are some cute things to win.  :)

I guess I will let you go for now.  Remember to take time to laugh and and share the joy someone.

God bless and keep you,
Sonia

Finally Finished!

Hello!   Has this week, flown by for anyone else, or am I alone in this?  :)

I just realized that next week is Thanksgiving!!

We are having a Thanksgiving meal, at work tomorrow and then on both sides of my family, this weekend.

Do you think I will get turkeyed out?  Gobble, Gobble!  :)

This time of year, as most you are probably aware, is a buzzing time for me.   I have to finish a quilt by tomorrow, then I will be starting on projects for Christmas.   I'm still working on the baby afghan too.   But it seems if I'm busy, I'm staying out of trouble.  :)   Can anyone relate?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

Do you prefer turkey or ham?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FINALLY FINISHED! :)

The lady I made this for likes the quilts to be tied.    So I'm going to show how I tie them.

First insert you needle in the direction  you're going to tie and tie a square knot. (over and through, then under and through).

Now, move to your next space for a tie and insert the needle in the direction you are going to tie.
Then, once you have pulled the thread through, and have the needle and thread on one side, insert the needle under the thread from the opposite side (as shown in the picture), then pull up taut, making the first tie.

Now, repeat the above step in the opposite direction.

It should look like this.

Continue to tie this way until your thread gets too short.  Then clip the ties.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well, a front moved in, dropped the temps and stuffed up my sinuses.... so I think I will go hang my head over a steaming bowl of lavender vapors.

Here's wishing you a Terrific Thursday!

God bless and keep you,
Sonia

My answer to the last question:  yes, a few from broken glass and gravel, others from surgery.

Awesome clouds

Hello!

One of the first thoughts I had this morning, was I had not posted the weekly recipe this week.   So here it is...

Easy Taco Salad
1 lb. ground beef (can use turkey)
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp cumin
1 can chili beans or ranch style beans
1 small head of lettuce, torn or chopped
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 tomato, chopped
shredded cheese
taco or tortilla chips, broken up

in a hot skillet brown the ground beef, salt and pepper to taste.  Drain of any fat.   Open can of chili beans and drain.  Add to browned meat, add chili powder and cumin, stir and let warm on low heat.  While it's warming combine the veggies and tortilla chips in a large bowl.   Pour the warm beef and bean mixture in with the veggies and chips, add shredded cheese and mix well.    Serve with salsa or ranch dressing and additional cheese and chips.   Very easy to make and yummy.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

When my husband came home this evening, he asked me to take a break from the quilt I was working on, to check out the night sky.

The clouds were awesome looking, being lit up by the moon.

I took a pic, but it doesn't do it justice.

I'm just always amazed at the beauty of God's creation.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

Do you have any scars?   How did you get them?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

 I started reading this book, this weekend.   It is about a Amish preacher's daughter, struggling to follow the rules of her dad/church, and following her heart.      So far, it's been very interesting.

Have you read any good fiction lately?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well, I guess that's it for tonight.   Keep an eye out for the block of the month.  I plan to post it by Thursday or Friday.  I've got a lot going on this week, so hopefully I'll get it posted on time.  :)

Let me leave you with a little inspiration...

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.  ~ John 14:27

Baby it's cold outside...

I was outside chatting on the phone.  The sky is clear, the stars and moon shining so bright I didn't need any other light, but I got very chilly, down right cold, as a matter of fact.    Fixed myself a cup of hot chocolate and this song came to mind.

 Micheal Buble' is a new favorite for me.   I liked this video with his voice mixed with Anne Murray's.

Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition

I received this from a friend today, and thought it made a lot of sense.  To me, it's getting back to the basics, like the old days.  Just using it in modern times.  So, I'm sharing it with you.  :)  But always remember the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, so many many years ago.

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods --merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This is concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

 It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?  Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?  Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down  the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day, flowers, a nice fruit basket.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theater. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

 Honestly, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house?  When you buy a five dollar string of lights, about fifty cents stays in the community.  If you have those kind of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city.  Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams.  And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.

THIS is the new American Christmas tradition. Think about it and if you agree,  Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?

Have a great Thursday!

God bless and keep you,
Sonia

Day of Surprises

Today, was a RAINY day!   We needed the rain and we got it today.    I was working in Russellville, a town 40 miles east of where I live, when I heard that tornado sirens were going off in Paris and that the schools had evacuated the students to the safe areas.  That surprised me and I quickly got on line and checked out the radar and began to pray.

I got back in Paris around 2 pm and then it got dark as night outside, because the rainclouds were so heavy and pouring down.   Thankfully, we didn't have a tornado or lose electricity, but I tell you it was a snappin' and poppin' outside.

It seems like rain always bring out the colors, in the trees.  After the rain slowed and it was clearing in the west, there was a orange cast to the sky and the fall foliage just popped!  I tried to take a picture, but my little digital just didn't do it justice.

I found a nice surprise in my mail box today.

A few weeks back I was notified that I had been picked for a drawing.   I received my prize today.    5 fat quarters in my favorite color, blue!   Aren't they pretty?!

Annie sent them to me.  I think she did a great job picking out the fabrics.  The card she sent with them was cute and sweet.

Thank you Annie!!

You can check Annie's blog out at http://rubyslipperz106.blogspot.com

Fear not!

Today, I found out some news, that my dad is facing a major medical situation.   12 years ago he had quintuple bypass on his heart.  He found out today, that three of them are 100% blocked and one is 90% blocked.    Please lift him and my mom up in prayer.

After talking to him this evening, I realize he is at peace.  That in itself comforts me, but more importantly knowing that I have a heavenly Father, is what really helps me cope.

As you know, I refer to scripture often and tonight is no different. :)

In the book of Revelation there is a scripture that I think deals with the trials we face in life.

Fear none of those things, which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. ~ Revelation 2:10

The amplified version says it like this... Fear nothing that you are about to suffer, [Dismiss your dread and your fears!]  Behold, the devil is indeed about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested and proved and critically appraised, and for ten days you will have affliction.  Be loyally faithful unto death [even if you must die for it], and I will give you the crown of life.

During this journey of life, from time to time, a "barbed wire barrier" is thrown across our path.   We find ourselves in a situation that isn't pleasant and can be downright scary.  We will be tried and tested.

The Lord says, fear not!  Though we have these trials and satan works against us, we can have victory through Jesus Christ.   That's what I am relying on in this situation with my dad.   I don't know what's going to happen next, but I know my dad is at peace with his Maker.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

What did you have for lunch yesterday?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The moon was peeking through the clouds tonight and I tried to get a good pic...

here's what I came up with.

The moon is so bright, when it isn't behind some clouds, that you can see to walk in the dark.

I guess that's it for this evening.   I hope you have a great rest of the week!

God bless and keep you,
Sonia

Hi.  :)

Went up the mountain today, to try to get some pics of the foliage changing colors.  It was hazy and windy.  I put my camera on the "action" setting in hopes I would get some decent pictures.   Here are a few.

Going up the mountain
Cameron's Bluff

I took some pics of my precious girl...

check this one out... she's sitting at the ledge and her first initial is written in the sky...
Then... she took a pic of me.                                                                                                                      Here's a picture of my hubby too.
 My son was working, so I don't have a pic of him.  :(

The wind was a little nippy, but it was beautiful to be out and looking out over the towns the surround us.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TODAY'S QUESTION

What's the last movie you watched?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As promised, here is the angel and Christmas tree I've been working on.   They are made from pages of a order catalog, I brought home from work.

I painted the angel white with gilded brass on the wing tips and then sprinkled glitter over it while it was wet.  The head is a wooden ball and the hair is yarn.

I painted the Christmas tree dark green and glittered it while it was wet.  The star is painted with the gilded brass color.

When I started painting them, yesterday, it was calm outside.  The wind picked up and started to blow about halfway through.   It was a chore to get that glitter to go where I wanted it to.  :)  The angel tried to take flight too!   But, everything managed to turn out okay.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Seeing the pretty foliage today, reminded of a haiku I wrote several years ago.

God's palette for Fall,
Brown, green, yellow, orange, red,
Painting the landscape.

I guess that's it for now.

Have a wonderful weekend!
